Convention By Rail

East and Westbound California Zephyrs

Eastbound meets Westbound: California Zephyrs in Glenwood Canyon

Tired of driving to convention?  Don’t like TSA checkpoints?   See the country and the beautiful Rocky Mountains as you have never seen them before.  Take a leisurely trip on Amtrak to Colorado by rail.

Please join Russell Kennedy on a trip from Washington , DC to Glenwood spring via Amtrak’s Capitol Limited and California Zephyr. There will be opportunities for joining along the route or taking other trains to Chicago and joining the California Zephyr.  For instance, the Cardinal runs from New York through Virginia and the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia to Cincinnati to Chicago.  The Washington to Glenwood Springs route will be the only semi-organized trip but join us anyway you can.  The current fare is $471 round-trip Coach. Sleeping accommodations can be arranged at additional cost.

We will leave Washington Union Station at 4:05pm on Thursday July 14, arriving at Chicago Union Station at 8:45 am Friday. There will be a 5 hour layover. The California Zephyr leaves at 2:pm and stops in Denver at 7:15am Saturday for 50 minutes, leaving again at 8:05am.

From Denver, the rail line passes through 30 tunnels as it climbs to 9,100 feet. It then crosses under the continental divide through the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel. On the west side of the continental divide, the rail line follows the Colorado River from its headwaters to Grand Junction, on its way to Salt Lake City and beyond. We will arrive at Glenwood Springs at 1:53pm Saturday. Arrangements will be made to pick us up by convention staff.

Anyone can join us at any step of the route.  Return trips are up to those coming on the trip.  All tickets must be arranged by individual riders with Amtrak.

For more information or just to discuss the trip, please email Russell Kennedy at or call him at 301-977-1804.

Enjoy the rhythm of the steel rails as you journey to Colorado…
