Pre-Convention Geology Tour

Eastern Field Trip: Glenwood Canyon-Camp Hale Route

Led by Fred Luiszer, this route will begin by stopping in the beautiful Glenwood Canyon where the Mississippian Age Leadville Formation, a major cave forming limestone that is found throughout Colorado, will be pointed out. The next stop at the mouth of the canyon will begin a trip though the Eagle Valley Evaporites where gypsum karst features will be looked at. Here the relationship of neo tectonism of the Eagle Valley Evaporites and cave development of the Glenwood Canyon caves will be discussed. One of the stops will look down on the ghost town of Gilman, home of the famous Eagle Mine, which at one time was a major producer of silver and lead. The trip will turn around at Camp Hale, was made famous during WWII by 10th Mountain Division as their training ground. At this stop we will be looking at glacial features of the valley as well as talking about interesting limestone units in the area. The entire route of this trip is through the beautiful Rocky Mountains with some of the best views in the state along with fascinating geology.
