Conundrum Hot Springs are beautiful, natural springs near the top of a high mountain valley in the Maroon Bells Wilderness. The 9 mile hike begins at around 8600 ft elevation and ends at 11,200ft through a spectacular valley with 12 and 13,000 ft peaks on both sides. This is a 3-day, 2 night backpacking trip. The trail is not difficult, but it is strenuous.
We will be leaving from the high school at 9am on Saturday, July 23rd, and return to Aspen on Monday. The trip is limited to 10 people including the trip leader (per Forest Service rules). Participants must be in good health and physical condition, and provide for their own needs and comfort throughout the trip. Nothing will be provided. If you are prone to altitude sickness, this trip is not for you. Prior backpacking experience in high altitude is highly recommended.
There are a number of campsites near the springs in the woods at tree line. We expect that the area will be pretty crowded, and parking at the trailhead will be at a premium. so we will carpool. The trip is naturally a ‘leave no trace’ trip. The Forest Service provides ‘poop bags’ for humans, and dogs are not permitted. A river runs through the camping area and most of the hike, so a water filtration system will be necessary for water.
Besides enjoying the Springs and just recovering from the initial hike, on Sunday a few of us (depending on weather and our disposition) may climb Castle (14,265 ft) and Conundrum Peaks to the East. Triangle Peak (13,380 ft) is also nearby, SW of the Springs.
Dates: Saturday, July 23 – Monday, July 25
Cost: Free, but the trip is limited to 10 people
